Can Xalant, Mataró, Barcelona Open Calls, Deadline: March 12, 2011

Can Xalant, Center for Creation of Visual Arts and Contemporary Thought, located in Mataró, Barcelona, announces two open calls for projects of intervention in the public spaces of Mataró and Vic, Barcelona.

The project "Ceci n’est pas une voiture. Nomadic devices loom around the museum" is born as a documentation and reflection exercise on the construction of mobile devices as elements of an expanded concept of the Museum or going as far as being an alternative to it.

It is a research project that aims at cataloguing and reflecting on those projects which, circulating in the public space, challenge the conventional notion of the Museum and reformulate instead the functions of the exhibition display as a nomadic platform nurturing direct and self-managed participation, development of social research and dissemination of educational experiences.

The project is carried out as a series of activities each of which is designed as a Parking episode. Parking 01, the first of this series, was developed and presented in Can Xalant in July 2010. The project as a whole is a build up of successive Parkings to be carried out throughout 2011. A more detailed definition of the project can be found on the following websites: http:/idensitat.net - http://canxalant.org – http://acvic.org

Parking 02. Open call for a project of intervention in the public space of Mataró using Idensitat’s Dispositivo Itinerante.

Dispositivo Itinerante [DI]
At different moments in 2009 and 2010, the Dispositivo Itinerante (Touring Device) has been part of workshops and seminars as an itinerant exhibition that conveys specific activities generated by Idensitat.

It has taken part in the iD Barrio project and was present at various activities of educational activities and intervention in the public space in Calaf (Espacio Hivernacle Cultural), Prat de Llobregat (Torre Muntadas), Barcelona (La Capella) and Manresa (Passeig Pere III).

It pursues the idea of an exhibition that expands in the territory and serves as a transmitter – receiver of data. Its itinerant nature allows affecting specific aspects of the territory through mobility. The Dispositivo Itinerante is a way to demonstrate and display one of Idensitat’s main objectives, which is to be an itinerant production space, which travels within the territory with the projects it produces, while generating insights, analysis and proposals for change.

In this case it is proposed as a support element that is integrated into the project selected from the open call, and can be modified and adapted to its needs. The Dispositivo Itinerante has some additional elements such as projector, various tables, chairs, projection screens and vertical supports.

Parking 03. Open call for a project of intervention in the public space of Vic using Can Xalant’s CX-R caravan.

CX-R is an adapted mobile caravan. Its portability allows the center to expand into the public arena, establish collaborations with its environment, and expand its scope of action and repercussion.

CX-R was designed and produced in 2009 by Argentine architects a77 (Gustavo Diéguez y Lucas Gilardi) and Pau Faus as a result of a workshop aiming at the collective construction of infrastructure for the courtyard of the center, through the development of a network of institutions and people in the immediate environment.

The laboratory was conceived as a process of physical construction, but also as a platform for social interaction to define a program. wecanxalant.blogspot.com

Since its opening, CX-R has been requested for different uses: artistic-educational interventions in schools, neighborhood festivals, stage for performances, artistic interventions, among others. CX-R can be modified for each application and project.

Deadline: March 12, 2011

Who can participate?

Both open calls are for artists who provide proposals of intervention in the public space from a trans-disciplinary perspective and the willingness to interact with different strategies within the social space of Mataró and Vic (Barcelona).

Participants will have to make a proposal that incorporates Idensitat’s Dispositivo Itinerante in the case of Mataró and Can Xalant’s CX-R in the case of Vic, and that will be carried out in the public space of the city.

The concept of space is to be understood in its dual capacity, physical and social. There are no prerequisites apart from these mentioned above; the project can therefore tackle cultural, political, educational or any other issue. At any rate, the strategy and formalization will have to deal with elements of latent tension in public space. The final location of the selected proposal in the public space will be subject to obtaining a municipal permit.

Calendar
The proposals will be carried out during a residency of 30 days, between May 1 and June 30, 2011.

Art and Artificial Life in the 12th edition of the International Vida Prizes, Deadline: Oct. 1, 2009

Fundación Telefónica, since its outset, has sought to support art-related technological innovation and has therefore paid close attention to new media art. In this context, the foundation founded VIDA, an international competition which rewards electronic works of art produced with artificial life technologies.

VIDA 12.0 rewards works of art developed with artificial life technologies and related disciplines: robotics, artificial intelligence, etc. It is looking for works of art with emerging behaviours, which evolve over time, react with their environment and seem to have a life of their own.

VIDA 12.0 is searching for projects that relate technology with biology and that research synthetic characteristics of modern life.
In previous editions, prizes have been awarded to artistic projects created with robots, avatars, recursive chaotic algorithms, knowbots, cellular automata, computer viruses, virtual ecologies that evolve with user interaction, interactive architectures, augmented reality pieces and works that explore the social aspects of A-life.

A total of €40,000 will be awarded to the three projects selected by the jury: First prize: €18,000(*), Second prize: €14,000(*), Third prize: €8,000(*). The winning pieces may be exhibited at Fundación Telefónica Virtual Gallery and in the exhibitions related to art and new technologies it organises or takes part in. Works of art submitted must not be more than two years old. This enables the Competition to keep updated and aware of the last technological trends in the field of artificial life.
